among my many obssessions is my obssession with lists. i realized recently that i’ve played (and beaten) 20 2-D platformers since i renewed my interest in video games, and so i thought i’d commemorate the event with a look back at my top 10 thus far. my list doesn’t include any of the many 2-D platformers i played when i was a kid b/c i want to replay them before i cast my judgement upon them, and clearly there are tons of noteworthy games that i haven’t played yet, but i plan on updating this list when i hit another milestone (i.e. 30 2-D platformers played).
just for comparison, i thought i’d also include the top 10 2-D platformers according to nintendo power, as extracted from their top 200 games list from 2005. their list is of course constrained to nintendo platforms and ends at 2005, but since that’s mostly what i’ve played as well the lists are still somewhat comparable. i should also note that my definition of a “platformer” is pretty strict and doesn’t include any games that emphasize combat or shooting (i.e. no beat ’em ups or run ‘n guns). also, i’ve included links to my previous blog entries on each game in my list. and now, without further ado, here it is:
|TOP 2-D PLATFORMERS (SO FAR …)|
|#||my list||NP’s list|
|1||super mario bros. (NES)||super mario bros. 3 (NES)|
|2||super mario world 2: yoshi’s island (SNES)||super mario world (SNES)|
|3||super mario land 2 (GB)||super mario bros. (NES)|
|4||mega man 2 (NES)||castlevania (NES)|
|5||kirby’s dream land (GB)||mega man 2 (NES)|
|6||donkey kong country (SNES)||super mario bros. 2 (NES)|
|7||super mario bros.: the lost levels (FC)||mega man (NES)|
|8||balloon kid (GB)||super castlevania IV (SNES)|
|9||new super mario bros. (DS)||super mario world 2: yoshi’s island (SNES)|
|10||wario land (VB)||ninja gaiden (NES)|
unsurprisingly the mario series clearly dominates both lists, and if i had included SMB2 and SMB3 they would’ve definitely been somewhere on my list as well. my list is clearly a mix of personal favorites and standards: i doubt anyone else would pick the original kirby’s dream land over any of the other kirby games, or include balloon kid, let alone in a higher position than NSMB. NP’s choices also include a few surprises, with a huge bias toward NES games. i’ve actually played all the games listed in NP’s list except for castlevania IV. most people seem to malign the original mega man, and although i enjoyed it and it’s been awhile since i’ve played it, i’m not sure it’d make my top 10. i also don’t think i’d include the original castlevania near the top of my list. also, if anyone’s wondering, sonic the hedgehog (gen) was the first runner-up on my list, and donkey kong country was the first runner-up on NP’s list.
only the top two games i’ve included make it to my list of absolute favorite games of all time, so there’s definitely room for some significant changes in the next installment. i actually end up playing 2D platformers more than any other genre, so the update probably won’t be too long coming. i suppose 2D platformers are actually my favorite genre since they’re gaming in its purest form: at their best they’re easy to pick up and hard to put down, colorful, atmospheric, addictive, challenging, and memorable. looking forward to playing even more and also branching out to more of the modern classics.
so there’s mine … what about you, hmm? feel free to post a comment.
boing! one platformin’ link:
– came across this random guy’s list of top 20 2-D platformers. a fairly unusual list (his #1 was drill dozer) and a bit skewed to more recent games (only one NES game and only one mario game), but kind of interesting.
